About me

I've worked in publishing of one sort or another since the mid-90s. I spent three years editing travel guidebooks for Lonely Planet before jumping the fence to become a freelance writer. I then worked at Wanderlust travel magazine for eight years, writing and editing features, news pages, websites and a range of customer magazines and supplements for tourist boards and travel operators. After a couple of years as deputy editor of BBC Wildlife Magazine, in 2012 I returned to freelance life as a full-time writer, photographer and editor.

It's fair to say that I love travel. I've cycled across Himalayan passes in Bhutan and around Faroese inlets, kayaked the Zambezi and New York's Hudson River, climbed volcanoes in Indonesia and summitted Mt Kenya, trekked in India (above), New Zealand and Australia, dived with sharks on the Great Barrier Reef and snorkelled with turtles and penguins in the Galápagos Islands, sailed Iceland's remote Westfjords, delved into ancient ruins in Belize, India, Cambodia and Burma, got lost in Kathmandu, Laos and Fès' ancient medina in Morocco, mushed a husky team through Swedish Lapland, tracked giant pandas in China, bears in Slovakia and tigers in Nepal, and walked with lions in Zambia and elephants in Tanzania. Closer to home, I've hiked the Tour du Mont Blanc in the Alps, Portugal's Rota Vicentina, part of Spain's Camino de Santiago, and all 630 miles of England's South West Coast Path.

I grew up in London suburbia at the edge of the Chiltern Hills, where my father dragged me walking most weekends – and now I love hiking and running. Which is best – mountains or coast? Ideally both, with good beer at the day's end.

These days, as well as writing about and photographing travel, wildlife, history and countryside topics, I provide editing services, create marketing material and project-manage the production of magazines and other publications.

If you think I could help you speak to your readers or customers,
